The outside group is currently funding an expansive ballot access effort, which is necessary since, unlike Biden and Trump and, to some extent, more established third parties, such access isn't automatically assured. No Labels is behind its previously stated timetable of being on the ballot in 27 states by the end of 2023. AdvertisementRobert F. Immediately after the polls closed on Saturday night, CNN projected that the former South Carolina governor had come up short to Trump. During the fourth quarter of 2023, Haley out-raised Trump, $24 million to $19 million. In January 2024, as the rest of the GOP field winnowed, Haley’s fundraising again bested Trump’s, $9.8 million to $8.8 million. To her credit, Haley has taken dead aim at both Trump and Putin, accusing the former of emboldening the latter. During the 2016 South Carolina primary, there were still six serious candidates in the GOP race.

CNN —As the dust settles on the tenure of former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, there are lessons the Republican Party should learn. As the Republican caucus considers its next steps, they must choose a leader whose stewardship signals a clear break from the past. Here are the ways that Trump triggered the events that fueled McCarthy’s downfall. In 2022, Republican Senate candidate Herschel Walker, a former football star whose controversial candidacy was fueled by his connection to the former president, met the same fate. Fast forward less than a year and Trump was nowhere to be found when McCarthy’s fate as speaker hung in the balance.

Trump had to agree, for example, to make no threats on social media against co-defendants, witnesses and the 30 unindicted co-conspirators. The former president has excoriated special counsel Jack Smith, who indicted him twice, on social media and in speeches. Elliot Williams, a former federal prosecutor and CNN legal analyst, said that the terms were fair and did not infringe on Trump’s rights. Trump’s many late-night social media eruptions will make it hard for observers to believe that he will stick to the conditions to which he’s agreed. By Monday evening, Trump had already posted on his social media network about the bond.

A Georgia grand jury indicted Donald Trump on charges related to his effort to overturn the 2020 election. That special grand jury completed a report earlier this year summarizing their findings and making charging recommendations to the Fulton County District Attorney's office. Trump believes he will be among them and is already fundraising off of the possibility of more criminal charges, casting them as Democratic efforts to interfere in the 2024 election. But there will be key differences between the potential case in Georgia and Trump’s previous indictments. Investigators have long suspected the breach was not an organic effort sprung from sympathetic Trump supporters in the Republican stronghold. Smith, for example, has asked a judge to open a trial into the election interference charges in January – just two weeks before the Iowa caucuses. It’s too early to speculate how headlines about these cases could weigh on Trump or Biden in November 2024.

Republican presidential candidate and former U.S. President Donald Trump speaks as he campaigns at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines, Iowa, U.S. August 12, 2023. Former President Donald Trump kicked off the week of his expected fourth indictment by railing against the judge overseeing the federal case charging him with illegally conspiring to subvert the 2020 election results. In a pair of social media posts just after midnight Monday, Trump attacked U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan as "highly partisan" and "very biased & unfair!" "She obviously wants me behind bars," Trump wrote on Truth Social at 1:14 a.m. "The people who mobbed that Capitol were there in fealty, in loyalty, to one man," Chutkan said, according to a transcript of the hearing.

Jordan earlier this month received a subpoena to testify before the grand jury. The Republican Trump has said he expects to be charged this week by Fulton County DA Fani Willis in what would be his fourth criminal indictment. Georgia criminal law makes it a felony to directly or indirectly try to deter a witness from testifying in any court or before a grand jury. In his Truth Social post on Monday, Trump wrote: "Would someone please tell the Fulton County grand jury that I did not tamper with the election." Trump was indicted in early August by a federal grand jury in Washington, D.C., on charges that he conspired with others to overturn his defeat in the national election in 2020.

Former Georgia Lt. Gov Geoff Duncan, a Republican, said Saturday on CNN that he has been told to appear Tuesday before a Fulton County grand jury to testify about the efforts by Trump and his allies. Independent journalist George Chidi posted on social media later Saturday that he’d been told to appear before the grand jury on Tuesday too. The witnesses Willis has subpoenaed to testify when she presents her case include Duncan, Chidi and former Georgia state Sen. Jen Jordan, a Democrat. Georgia law is unusual in that special purpose grand juries – which have broad investigative powers – are not permitted to issue indictments. When the subpoenaed witnesses appear before the regular grand jury, those grand jurors will hear the witnesses’ testimony for the first time with a narrower purpose at hand: to approve or reject indictments.

The Atlanta prosecutor overseeing the investigation of possible crimes by Donald Trump for trying to reverse his defeat in Georgia's 2020 presidential election is expected to present her case to a grand jury next week, NBC News reported. That presentation by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis could lead to an indictment of the former president in the case on state charges. In addition to Trump, Willis is known to be eyeing a number of the ex-president's allies for possible criminal charges, as well. NBC has been in contact with three people who received subpoenas to appear before a grand jury in Fulton County Superior Court, where officials have been ramping up security measures in recent days. Former President Donald Trump is seen in court on Thursday in this courtroom sketch. America now faces the prospect of an ex-president repeatedly going on trial in an election year in which he’s the Republican front-runner and is promising a new White House term of retribution. He is responding with the same kind of extreme rhetoric that injected fury into his political base and erupted into violence after the last election. If he wins back the White House, the already twice-impeached new president could trigger a new constitutional crisis by sweeping away the federal cases against him or even by pardoning himself. Any alternative Republican president could find themselves besieged by demands from Trump supporters for a pardon that, if granted, could overshadow their entire presidency.

CNN —In the classic 1999 film, “Election,” the high school student government vote has everything: naked ambition, campaign poster shredding, ballot manipulation, infidelity and more. But what the gifted writer Tom Perotta likely couldn’t imagine was an election in which two unpopular candidates square off for president. That doesn’t happen in high school, even in a satirical movie. The president supports stripping that state of its first-in-the-nation primary status in favor of South Carolina, the state that energized Biden’s 2020 campaign. “In the runup to the 2024 elections, Democrats plan to put the Supreme Court on trial,” wrote David Mark.
